A real island in the Maldives’ Noonu Atoll, surrounded by reef shallows and ocean.

Maldives tours

Find your kind of island holiday: beach or overwater villa, lagoon or reef, a boat ride or a flight above the atolls. Read, explore and collect the ideas you would like us to consider.

The Maldives, your way

From a first idea to your island

Picture a day in the Maldives. Explore the islands, villas and ways to get there. Add anything that appeals to your wishes, and bring your list into trip planning.

You can simply read. There is no need to select everything or follow the chapters in order. Choosing several options helps us compare them for you.

The guide has six chapters. Five offer wishes to choose; preparation is simply there to read. The circle shows your position in the text. “Help me find a tour” opens a request to DAMAX with your wishes. You can continue without choosing any.

Chapter 1 of 6Villa and holiday

What does your ideal morning look like?

Start with a simple choice: stepping barefoot onto sand or having coffee above the water? Then consider what you want nearby. These wishes help narrow down an island and villa category.

A beach villa among palms and overwater villas beside a calm turquoise lagoon.

A water villa or a beach villa?

For each category, consider its water access, terrace and position. With a child, also establish the actual hotel’s accommodation rules and a safe route to its swimming area.

Where would you like to wake up?

Mark the villa format that appeals to you. If both interest you, keep both for a comparison of specific options.

Beach villa

I want to walk from my villa to the beach. Show me what the shore is like beside that particular room.

Overwater villa

I like the idea of a deck over the water. Show me its position and access to the lagoon.

What matters beyond the villa itself?

The water, staying with children and personal space address different needs. Combine the things that matter to you.

Reef and snorkelling

I want to spend more time in the water. Let’s compare reef access and snorkelling conditions.

Lagoon swimming

I want relaxed swims close to shore. Help me find suitable access to the water.

Travelling with children

We are travelling with children. Consider their ages, accommodation and the journey to the island.

Quiet and privacy

I want less bustle and more personal space. Let’s compare villa locations.

Chapter 2 of 6Atolls

Your island on the Maldives map

Browse from north to south and compare the resort examples. Reviews refer to the named hotel: beach access, the reef and holiday conditions can differ even between villas on one island. Save the areas you would like to explore.

An aerial view of a palm-covered island surrounded by a pale lagoon and coral reef.

A reading route, not a map of distances.

Atolls with island resorts

The Maldives has 26 natural atolls. This guide covers 21 travel areas with 4-5-star island resorts, dividing larger atolls into separate resort regions.

Places: 21
Haa AlifuHideaway: 33 hectaresAir transfer

Haa Alifu has Hideaway Beach Resort on Dhonakulhi and JA Manafaru on Manafaru. Hideaway occupies a green island of 33 hectares, with space for walking and cycling. JA Manafaru offers beach and overwater villas with private pools. Hideaway arrivals use seaplanes or domestic flights to Hanimaadhoo followed by a boat.

A JA Manafaru guest enjoyed reef access from his overwater villa. If this matters, confirm water access for your chosen category and current snorkelling conditions.

Haa DhaaluDifferent resort formatsFlight and boat / seaplane

Haa Dhaalu includes Hondaafushi Island Resort and Soneva Secret on Dhipparufushi, within the natural Makunudhoo area. Their stays differ: Hondaafushi beach bungalows versus Soneva beach and overwater villas. Hondaafushi uses a domestic flight and boat; Soneva also offers seaplanes. Compare each hotel and its complete journey, beyond the regional name.

A Hondaafushi guest found beach access to the reef difficult because of distance and current. Confirm jetty access, snorkelling conditions and domestic flight scheduling before booking.

ShaviyaniSirru's CoralariumJW children's club

Shaviyani has Sirru Fen Fushi Private Lagoon Resort on Gaakoshibee and JW Marriott Maldives Resort & Spa on Vagaru. Sirru has a lagoon, house reef and Coralarium underwater gallery. JW offers beach and overwater pool villas plus a children's club. Reach these islands by seaplane after your international flight to Malé.

A Sirru Fen Fushi guest praised snorkelling beside her overwater villa but found extras expensive. Check which restaurants, drinks and excursions your particular package includes.

NoonuIsland: 54 hectaresFloating water park

One Noonu resort, Siyam World on Dhigurah, occupies a natural island of 54 hectares. It offers beach and overwater villas, restaurants and activities on land and water. Arrive by seaplane or a domestic flight to Maafaru and boat. Hotel attractions include a floating water park with slides, obstacles and trampolines.

A Siyam World guest found the island buses helpful for getting around. If you prefer shorter walks, confirm villa location, nearby restaurants and island transport before booking.

RaaHouse reef and lagoonPremium all inclusive

Niva Dhigali in Raa offers a private island stay with a premium all inclusive package. The resort has a house reef, lagoon and beach and overwater villas. Transfers use seaplanes or a domestic flight and boat, depending on arrival time. The package includes dining, drinks, minibar, kayaks and snorkelling equipment.

A Niva Dhigali guest reported morning seaplane noise near her beach villa. If noise matters, ask where your proposed villa sits relative to the landing area.

BaaUNESCO biosphere reserveAmilla house reef

Baa belongs to UNESCO's network of biosphere reserves. At Amilla Maldives on Finolhas, this marine setting combines with spacious private pool villas and tropical greenery. The hotel offers a house reef and marine excursions. Arrival is by seaplane or a domestic flight to Dharavandhoo and boat, depending on your transfer.

An Amilla wheelchair user described difficulty crossing sand to some facilities. If relevant, confirm the complete route from transfers to your villa, restaurants and pool.

LhaviyaniFamily and adult zonesSeaplane transfer

Kuredu Island Resort & Spa in Lhaviyani combines different stays on one island: beach and overwater accommodation, a family area and zones with age restrictions. Arrival is by seaplane. Before choosing a room, check its zone rules and available restaurants: the island name alone does not determine a holiday with children.

A Kuredu guest travelling with her ten year old daughter used Koamas restaurant. For family trips, confirm your zone's age rules and assigned restaurant before booking.

North MaléSpeedboat to BarosNo domestic flight

North Malé is worth considering for a shorter journey after your international flight. Baros offers beach and overwater villas, a house reef and a speedboat transfer of around 25 minutes, without a domestic flight. Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru is another five-star island resort to compare in this area.

For daily snorkelling at Baros, ask about reef entry points near your villa and the dive centre's guidance. Compare water access from beach and overwater accommodation.

South MaléAnantara Dhigu lagoonShort speedboat transfer

South Malé offers different holiday formats without necessarily requiring a domestic flight. Five-star Anantara Dhigu has beach and overwater villas around a lagoon, roughly 30 minutes from the airport by speedboat. Nearby Anantara Veli welcomes adults. Start with your travelling party and preferred beachfront, then compare the individual islands.

At Dhigu, consider the lagoon and villa position. For daily snorkelling, check reef access: a lovely sandy swimming beach and a nearby reef are different priorities.

North AriPool in every Halaveli villaAround 25 minutes by seaplane

Explore North Ari through individual islands and their access to the water. Five-star Constance Halaveli combines a lagoon with beach and overwater villas, each with its own pool. The resort quotes around 25 minutes by seaplane from Malé. Your preferred mix of beach, terrace and pool helps shape each day.

For daily snorkelling at Halaveli, compare reef access with your villa's location. Ask where to enter the water and which route the team recommends for your experience.

South AriEight LUX* restaurantsSeaplane to the island

South Ari can suit a stay with plenty of variety. Five-star LUX* South Ari Atoll offers 193 villas and pavilions, beaches, overwater accommodation and eight restaurants. Its main transfer takes around 25 minutes by seaplane. This spacious resort allows you to combine walks, lagoon time and different dinner settings.

LUX* guests describe bikes, an island shuttle and separate guided reef outings. Check distances from your villa and the snorkelling arrangements before choosing your accommodation category.

RasdhooCompact VeliganduSpacious Kuramathi

Rasdhoo allows you to compare islands of distinctly different sizes. Five-star Veligandu is around 600 metres long, with a lagoon, house reef and sandbank. Kuramathi stretches for 1.8 kilometres. Veligandu offers seaplane or speedboat transfers. First decide whether you prefer a compact island or more space for daily walks.

At Veligandu, compare beach photographs from both sides: guests mention breakwaters and differing villa experiences. Ask to see your exact accommodation category on the island map.

VaavuReef near VelifushiBeach and overwater villas

Consider Vaavu through the combination of island life and snorkelling. Five-star Cinnamon Velifushi has beach and overwater accommodation, a lagoon and a house reef near the shore. It is one example for balancing time by the water with reef exploration. Check each villa's position relative to the beach and reef.

At Velifushi with a young child, request a map of stroller routes. Also check the reef by your villa: guests describe these details shaping their stay.

MeemuHakuraa Huraa: adults onlyLagoon and Platinum Beach

Meemu includes Cinnamon Hakuraa Huraa, with a lagoon, overwater villas and a separate Platinum area of beach bungalows. Since November 2025, its operator has positioned the resort as a five-star, adults-only retreat. For a holiday together, compare the views from an overwater terrace with staying directly on the beach.

At Hakuraa Huraa, check lagoon swimming depth and how to reach the reef. Guests describe separate snorkelling outings; confirm their current schedule for your own trip.

FaafuFilitheyo house reefSeaplane plus short boat ride

In Faafu, four-star Filitheyo offers a green island with beach and overwater villas and a house reef. Its journey includes around 35 minutes by seaplane, followed by another ten minutes aboard a traditional dhoni boat. Consider this specific resort if an additional sea leg suits your plans for reef exploration.

At Filitheyo, check snorkelling equipment rental and suitable reef entry points beforehand. Guests also mention mosquitoes on the green island, worth considering for your evening walks.

DhaaluPrivate pool at Iru VeliAround 45 minutes by seaplane

Consider Dhaalu for a resort where water and a private pool shape your daily routine. Five-star Sun Siyam Iru Veli offers beach and overwater suites, each with a pool, and lagoon views. Its operator quotes around 45 minutes by seaplane. Villa category and position help you choose your preferred setting.

For quiet sleep at Iru Veli, check your villa's position near seaplane landings and busy walkways. Consider distances to facilities alongside access to the reef.

ThaaAround an hour by seaplaneBeach and overwater accommodation

In Thaa, five-star COMO Maalifushi offers beach and overwater accommodation around an hour's seaplane flight from Malé. Allow for this additional air journey after your international arrival. On the island, compare staying beside the beach or over the lagoon, and choose water activities to match your own experience level.

For a surfing trip to Maalifushi, discuss the season, available breaks and your ability with Tropical Surf. Guests particularly value the team's local knowledge during sessions.

LaamuDirect seaplane to Six SensesRahaa lagoon and lake

Laamu lets you compare five-star Six Senses Laamu with four-star Rahaa, which has a lagoon and natural lake. Six Senses now mainly uses a direct seaplane flight of around 65 minutes; domestic flights with a boat connection are available on request. Check transfers and surroundings for the individual resort.

Six Senses guests describe a walkable island despite its remoteness. Check your villa's position and plan the length of your stay with the additional flight in mind.

Gaafu AlifuDomestic flight and speedboatSpacious Pullman Maamutaa

Gaafu Alifu, northern Huvadhu, offers different island settings, including five-star Pullman Maamutaa and Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa. Pullman quotes around 55 minutes by domestic flight to Kooddoo, followed by 15 minutes by speedboat. Compare the villas, each resort's specific transfer arrangements and how you would access its reef.

Hadahaa guests described weather limiting their reef outings. Avoid planning around guaranteed turtle sightings: even a reef that travellers enjoy does not promise particular wildlife encounters.

Gaafu DhaaluDomestic flight and speedboatBoat time depends on airport

Gaafu Dhaalu, southern Huvadhu, includes five-star Ayada with beach and overwater accommodation. Its main journey comprises around 55 minutes by domestic flight, then 25-50 minutes by speedboat, depending on the local airport. Consider the complete journey to your villa: flights, connections and the sea leg, rather than flying time alone.

For Ayada, confirm the local airport, waiting arrangements and boat time before paying. Guests describe a long onward journey; the advertised flight duration excludes other transfer stages.

AdduThrough Gan airportIsland walks and bicycles

In Addu, four-star Canareef offers a long coastline and room for island walks. From Malé, the journey goes through Gan airport, followed by a short boat ride. Canareef has no house reef, so plan snorkelling separately. Island size and beachfront position matter when comparing villas at this particular resort.

At Canareef, check the beach by your villa and distance to swimming areas. Guests recommend bicycles; a large island does not mean every villa has identical surroundings.

Natural or reclaimed island: what is the difference?

Natural island

Most natural islands in the Maldives formed as sand and coral fragments gradually built up on reefs. This land was not created by people through reclamation.

Reclaimed island

People create or extend a reclaimed island by adding sand and other material to form dry land. Hulhumalé is one example: it was created on reclaimed land in Hulhulé’s lagoon as an extension of Malé. Origin alone does not tell you what the beach, water or hotel is like. Compare the actual hotel, its beach, lagoon and reef.

Chapter 3 of 6Getting to your island

The journey starts before the island

The journey to your villa can be part of the experience. Explore the options and mark those you would like to consider. We will check them against your island and arrival time.

Three ways to your island

After arriving at Velana, your journey to the resort may follow one of these routes. The exact route, timing and cost are arranged for your island.

Speedboat

  1. Velana Airport
  2. Speedboat
  3. Your island

After collecting your bags, find the agreed boarding point. The speedboat takes you to the resort jetty; confirm whether the transfer is shared or private.

Seaplane

  1. Velana Airport
  2. Seaplane
  3. Your island

First, transfer to the seaplane terminal. Landing on water may be followed by a short boat journey; arrange the full route with the resort.

Domestic flight and speedboat

  1. Velana Airport
  2. Local airport
  3. Your island

The domestic flight arrives at a local airport. A speedboat usually completes the journey; confirm the meeting point, waiting time and any night transfer.

Seaplanes: TMA, Maldivian, Manta Air. Domestic flights: Maldivian, Villa Air. The carrier depends on the resort.

Arrival and daylight hours

Seaplanes fly during daylight. TMA recommends an international arrival by 15:30 local time for a same-day transfer. Confirm your onward and return connections with your operator.

Baggage on the final flight

TMA’s per-person allowance: 20 kg checked baggage + 5 kg hand baggage. Infants have no separate allowance. Confirm your carrier’s conditions and size limits before booking.

The full journey to your villa and back

Arrange the air and sea legs in both directions: waiting times, baggage and what is included in the price. Weather and schedules can affect connections. Before booking, establish whether you can reach the resort that day and what to do if there is a delay.

Ways to reach your island

Speedboat: the sea leg

How it works

Ari’s official guide describes shared and private speedboats. Check the destination island and boarding point; plan the transfer around your accommodation.

A small turboprop aircraft on an apron beside a tropical lagoon.

Domestic flight: map the whole journey

How it works

Ari’s guide describes a domestic flight between Velana and Maamigili. This is the air leg, rather than automatic arrival at any island. Mark the airport and your final accommodation separately on the map.

A twin-float seaplane beside a jetty in a tropical lagoon.

Seaplane: arriving on the water

How it works

Landing on water may still leave a short boat transfer: check how you get from the platform to the island.

If you want to travel with your own party

A twin-engine seaplane flying above a tropical lagoon.

Private seaplane: a flight for your party

How it works

TMA also describes private seaplane charters for your own travelling party. This is a different way to arrange the air leg. If it interests you, consider it separately rather than treating it as a standard part of every transfer.

A passenger speedboat with an enclosed cabin cruising through a tropical lagoon.

Private speedboat: your party on the water

How it works

A boat just for your party, rather than a shared transfer. This option needs to be arranged for your particular route. Start with your pickup point, destination island, date and passenger count: these details help determine the right boat and journey.

Chapter 4 of 6Experiences

What will you remember beyond the beach?

Leave room for a small discovery. Your chosen ideas give your adviser a starting point to check routes and availability for your island.

Coral and tropical fish beneath sunbeams in clear water.
A kayaker among mangrove roots above calm water.

A different pace in Addu Nature Park

A bicycle ride through wetlands or a canoe outing changes the usual beach perspective. Keep this park in mind for a day when you want to see the islands’ greener side and move at a slower pace.

An artisan’s hands weave a basket from natural fibres on a wooden table.

Getting to know island culture

Dhoni boats, woven reed mats and lacquered wooden objects each tell something about the Maldives. Fish and coconut add flavour to that story. Leave room in your plans for local crafts and food as well as scenery.

Clownfish beside a sea anemone among coral.

Look beyond the big fish

Ari’s reefs offer coral gardens and clownfish among anemones. Look beyond one dramatic photograph: smaller marine life rewards a closer look.

Chapter 5 of 6Dates and preparation

A relaxed departure starts at home

If you are still choosing dates, start with the seasonal overview. Then read the entry requirements, IMUGA instructions and journey notes. This chapter is for preparation; its points do not need to go into your wishes.

When to visit the Maldives

  • The meteorological service places the dry northeast monsoon from January to March.

  • The wet southwest monsoon normally runs from mid-May to November.

  • December and April are transition months between monsoons.

  • The climate is warm and humid year-round, with average temperatures of 25-32°C. Check the forecast for your actual dates.

Maldives entry

  • Key conditions; check full requirements for your passport and route before travel.

  • Tourist visa on arrival without prior approval; entry remains the immigration officer’s decision.

  • Passport or travel document with a machine-readable zone (MRZ), valid for at least one month. Extended passports are not accepted.

  • Children need their own passport and IMUGA declaration.

  • Confirmed return tickets.

  • Confirmed, prepaid accommodation at a registered property.

  • Sufficient funds or Maldives Immigration-approved sponsorship.

What to keep within reach

A small bag for the journey

Put your first-day essentials in one small bag: a change of clothes, a cable, headphones and the things you use while travelling. It saves opening your main suitcase repeatedly. Adapt the list to your own journey.

Keep beach things together

Keep swimwear, a light cover-up and a bag for used items together. Add your own mask or camera if you are bringing one. Pack for the things you enjoy rather than someone else’s perfect photograph.

A short island plan

Keep your island and accommodation names together with journey notes in one file. Separate what is already arranged from your own holiday ideas. A little organisation leaves more attention for the trip itself.
